Lime Mortar Analysis

Matching a repair mortar to the surviving original is the single biggest technical decision on any re-pointing project. Get it wrong and the new joints will either out-harden the brick and spall the arrises, or weather away in a decade. Get it right and the repairs disappear.

We partner with a materials lab in Reading who analyse mortar samples using acid digestion, sieve analysis, and microscopy. You post us a small sample (we provide instructions and a pre-addressed sample envelope on order), and within two weeks we return a written report containing: composition by weight, sand grain analysis, binder type, and a matched mortar specification suitable for a heritage contractor to procure and mix.

This service is available to anyone — you do not need to be an Ashford & Grey client. Many of our customers are owners who are commissioning repair work through other contractors and want an independent specification to give them.
